Septic Solutions: An Introduction

I recently bought a house with a septic tank for the very first time. I thought I was prepared, but I really had no idea what I was getting into. Shortly after we moved in, the septic tank backed up. I had to call for emergency septic services to have it pumped and taken care of. That's when I learned that I had overlooked some of the signs that the tank needed to be emptied. I created this site to share my experience and the tips that I learned along the way. My goal is to help others avoid the same septic problems that I have dealt with.

Why Avoid Using A Liquid Drain Cleaner

by Camila Pena

Do you have a clogged drain that is causing water to move very slowly down it? If so, you may be tempted to use a liquid drain cleaner to get the water flowing again. Here are some reasons to avoid using a liquid drain cleaner to fix your clogged drain.

Liquid Drain Cleaners Get Diluted Easily

A liquid drain cleaner is really going to work well when it can be applied directly to a clog. Unfortunately, the chemicals can become severely diluted by the time it reaches the clog. This can be due to other water that is in the drain or some of the chemicals flowing past the clog. There is no way to see what has happened to the chemicals once they are poured down a drain, so this can leave you stumped about if you used the chemicals correctly. Some people end up using more chemicals than they need, which can cause other problems with their plumbing.

Liquid Drain Cleaners Can Damage Pipes

If you have older galvanized plumbing in your home, know that those liquid drain cleaners can cause a lot of damage to the pipes themselves. Those old pipes tend to corrode on the inside where you cannot see it, and the chemicals will sit in the pipe due to the clog and eat away at the metal. While your goal may be to get rid of a clog, you may end up causing a pipe to burst and not require an emergency trip from a local plumber to fix it. You are better off not using chemicals to avoid this problem, even if you have new pipes which are not as likely to be damaged.

Liquid Drain Cleaners Are Harmful If Exposed To Them

The chemicals used in these liquid drain cleaners are known to cause irritation to your skin, eyes, and lungs if you are exposed to them. Does this really seem like something you want to be around where there are so many warnings on the label about the risks of being exposed to the chemicals? You can avoid the risk by using alternate techniques that are more effective at cleaning a drain and do not expose you to dangerous fumes or liquids.

Reach out to a local plumber for drain cleaning if you need assistance with clearing a clogged drain. They can use a sewer snake to get rid of the toughest clogs located deep within a pipe.
