Septic Solutions: An Introduction

I recently bought a house with a septic tank for the very first time. I thought I was prepared, but I really had no idea what I was getting into. Shortly after we moved in, the septic tank backed up. I had to call for emergency septic services to have it pumped and taken care of. That's when I learned that I had overlooked some of the signs that the tank needed to be emptied. I created this site to share my experience and the tips that I learned along the way. My goal is to help others avoid the same septic problems that I have dealt with.

Septic Solutions: An Introduction

2 Reasons Why You Should Regularly Pump Your Septic Tank

by Camila Pena

If your home depends on a septic tank to dispose of your household wastewater, maintenance of the system is vital to its proper functioning. This maintenance includes cleaning out the tank by having it pumped every few years. If you usually let this important part of maintaining the system go for too long, below are two reasons why you need to have the tank pumped out regularly.

1.  Solid Particulates Will Cause the Leach field to Fail

One reason why you need to have your septic tank pumped out every few years is that any solid waste products settle on the bottom of the tank. Over time, this waste builds up to the point that it starts to flow into the lines that lead to the leach field.

The leach field is an important part of the septic system, as it helps siphon excess fluid from the tank to keep it from overflowing. As the solid waste travels up the lines, the particulates pack into the soil of the leach field. Because the soil is no longer able to absorb fluid because of these particulates, the fluid inside of the septic tank will build up.

To get the leach field working properly again once it has been contaminated with solid particulates, the soil has to be removed and replaced. Having your tank pumped regularly helps to prevent this entire problem.

2.  Sewage Will Eventually Back up into Your House

Another reason why you need to have your septic system cleaned out every few years is to avoid having sewage backing up into your house. Even without leach field contamination, when the tank starts to fill up too rapidly with both solid and liquid waste, the tank will not be able to store any additional waste.

Since the sewage will travel the path of least resistance, it will eventually make it up through your home's main sewer lines and up through your home's drains. Since this sewage has extreme numbers of bacteria, your sinks, toilet, shower, and other drains will be contaminated. Pumping out the system regularly can help you avoid this issue.

If it has been more than a few years since you had your septic tank cleaned out, do not wait any longer so that you can avoid the above scenarios. Contact septic tank pumping services to have them give your system a good cleaning out as well as inspect it so that they can find any possible issues that need to be addressed.
