Septic Solutions: An Introduction

I recently bought a house with a septic tank for the very first time. I thought I was prepared, but I really had no idea what I was getting into. Shortly after we moved in, the septic tank backed up. I had to call for emergency septic services to have it pumped and taken care of. That's when I learned that I had overlooked some of the signs that the tank needed to be emptied. I created this site to share my experience and the tips that I learned along the way. My goal is to help others avoid the same septic problems that I have dealt with.

Septic Solutions: An Introduction

3 Things You Must Consider When You Have A Septic System

by Camila Pena

How long has it been since you thought about your septic tank? Have you ever actually sat down and given much thought to your septic system at all? If you answered in the negative, don't feel bad; plenty of people use their homes without giving much thought to whether they have a city sewer hookup or something else. With ordinary usage, there is little to distinguish between the two methods of sewage disposal. However, there are still a few differences that you need to be aware of and take into consideration at least once in a while. These include:

1. Sewage removal: With a city sewer system, you flush the toilet, and the waste is automatically carried away from your home to the nearest waste processing plant. With a septic system, the waste is flushed into your septic tank. Within the tank, the liquids are allowed to flow back into the ground while the solids collect at the bottom of the tank to be removed by one of your local septic pump services. This is something that will need to be done every three to five years or so and cannot simply be avoided. Failure to have a full tank pumped out when it is full can result in damage that can be expensive to have repaired.

2. Tank additives: Your septic tank is only able to work at maximum efficiency if it has a good-sized population of beneficial yeasts and bacteria living within the tank to help further break down the sewage solids. Things like extreme heat, extreme cold, and various chemicals can kill off these beneficial organisms and make your tank much less efficient. To avoid having to call the local septic pump services more frequently, you should avoid using things like antibacterial soap whenever possible. Every month or two, you should also be using some sort of septic system additive to help replenish any lost populations of microorganisms to help boost your tank's ability to process waste.

3. Caution When flushing: Some things, such as clay cat litter or baby wipes, should not be flushed down the toilet regardless of whether you have a city sewer system or rely on your local septic pump services to carry the waste away for you. Other things are not going to be so obvious. For instance, some brands of toilet paper don't break down very quickly and are not safe to use in septic systems. Before putting anything down the drain or flushing it down the toilet, always read the package to make sure that the manufacturer says that this is safe to do when you have a septic system. If nothing is said on the package, it's always safer to assume that the thing in question is unsafe to flush down the drain.
