About Me

Septic Solutions: An Introduction

I recently bought a house with a septic tank for the very first time. I thought I was prepared, but I really had no idea what I was getting into. Shortly after we moved in, the septic tank backed up. I had to call for emergency septic services to have it pumped and taken care of. That's when I learned that I had overlooked some of the signs that the tank needed to be emptied. I created this site to share my experience and the tips that I learned along the way. My goal is to help others avoid the same septic problems that I have dealt with.

4 Important Actions To Take When You Have A Septic System

by Camila Pena

When you have a septic system, the actions you take in regards to your septic system are important. You are responsible for making sure that all of your wastewater is handled correctly and that your system is taken care of. There are a wide variety of actions you can take to support the health and maintenance of your septic system.

Important Action #1: Direct Water Away from the Dransfield

First, you need to make sure that you are directing water from your land and your roof so that it doesn't head towards your drainage field. Your drainage field is where the wastewater in your septic tank goes for the final filtration process before the water joins the groundwater system again.

You don't want to over saturate that area with water. If you over saturate the area with water, your drainage field will not be able to properly filter your water, and your septic system will not work properly.

Important Action #2: Keep the Lid Secure

Your septic tank has a lid on it. That lid allows for your septic tank to be accessed so that it can be pumped and cleaned out easily. The lid is kind of large, and if left open, an animal or even a child could fall into your tank.

You need to make sure that the lid to your septic tank is always securely closed. Some people also like to put a little well-style house over the top of their septic tank lid for added protection.  Putting a little house over your septic tank lids keeps things secure, and makes it easier to access and find your septic tank when it needs to be pumped

Important Action #3: Get an Inspection Every Year

Your septic tank plays a very important role in the overall function of your household, which is why you need to make sure that you get an inspection every year.

You should work with a septic tank professional to get a yearly inspection to ensure everything is working correctly, and to take care of any maintenance needs.

Important Action #4: Keep to a Regular Pumping Schedule

Finally, you are going to want to keep to a regular pumping schedule as well. You should pump your tank every few years. Pumping your tank every few years will keep your tank from overflowing which can be a stinky and hazardous mess to deal with.

If you have a septic tank on your property, you need to make sure that you take good care of this helpful and vital system. You need to make sure you are directing water from your home away from the drainage field.  You need to keep the lid secure and closed on your septic tank. You need to work with a septic tank professional to get a yearly inspection and repairs, and be sure to pump your tank on a regular schedule to prevent overflowing.
